No matter whether you are a newcomer to the hobby of astronomy or a seasoned veteran, you will no doubt be familiar with Celestron and their enviable telescope building reputation. Celestron has been in business since 1960 and been an innovator, seeing many firsts, won awards and been used by professional astronomers.

Celestron had its origin in 1960 when it was established as Valor Electronics by Tom Johnson, who was frustrated with the telescope offerings at the time. Tom decided to manufacture a telescope from scratch, which at the time needed to be completely hand made. The first challenge was to devise the method to produce the Schmidt corrector plate that is featured in top of the line catadioptric telescopes. This is because the corrector plate has a wavy surface, despite appearing flat which is challenging to mass make using standard procedures and equipment.

By 1970, the Celestron design team made an optical breakthrough and were ready to mass-produce telescopes that were understandable and extremely affordable.

Tom Johnson sold Celestron in 1980 and between then and 2002 there were several changes in the company ownership, resulting in three of Celestron’s senior management team buying its assets in 2002. Celestron telescopes are the telescope of preference for many consumers and major universities and colleges worldwide are using their telescopes in their astronomy courses and programs. NASA also selected Celestron’s C5 telescope to be taken on several space shuttle research missions.

Today, Celestron labor to be innovators with modern technology and to build telescopes for both the professional and amateur astronomer that are more affordable and powerful. They offer a wide selection of models, all with excellent but unique features. Their modern telescopes are more easily transported than many of their competitors and have been designed to create packages that are portable and lightweight. Their products are available via a variety of retail outlets, distributors and online retailers such as Amazon.

Another area where Celestron excel is with their customer support, which is second to none and Celestron products are supported by a two year warranty which is one of the best warranty programs in the industry. Support is available via their website which features a knowledgebase, downloadable user manuals, phone support for those located in North America and a technical support form.

Celestron also produces other products including microscopes, spotting scopes, a range of binoculars and many accessories. Many of their new telescopes also feature their Sky Scout star encyclopedia which will pinpoint what you’re seeing in the night sky and tell you about it. Now that’s what I call cutting edge astronomy.
